Aimed at the preschool range it’s built rugged and durable with solid grips and big buttons.As usual the Vtech folks did their homework and packed a lot of features into a competitive-priced camera for the little photographer in your life without dazzling or overwhelming them.

I bought this product for my kids last Christmas - yes, one each to avoid squabbling – and in less than an hour they were watching slideshows on TV and uploading pictures and videos to the PC.

Like any parent I worry about my children spending too much time in front of the TV, computer or game boxes, but with the Vtech Kidizoom I know they are creating and discovering about photography while having fun – a godsend to any parent, right?

The Kidizoom camera comes with easy-to-use editing software you install on a PC and let’s your little ones add silly and fun stuff to their pictures – many times with hilarious results. Children are much more inventive than adults when it comes to creating, and mine quickly put together some downright barrel laughs once they started experimenting with the software.

In the last year my kids have used the Kidizoom to capture their own precious pictures and videos. It’s great to watch them experiment and learn on this low-priced and lightweight digital camera rather than my own expensive, heavy and complicated Canon.

There’s no such thing as a perfect product and the Vtech Kidizoom Digital Camera has a few limitations to be aware of…

• Vtech isn’t trying to compete with a 10-megapixel top-of-the-line Nikon camera for resolution. But the quality of the .3 megapixel picture should satisfy most children.
• The 1.8inch LCD viewfinder is a little inaccurate when focusing – but for young kids this is not a major issue.
• And of course the frustration of any parent… batteries not included. The Vtech Kidizoom camera requires 4 AA batteries.
